about alpha blondy:
With his simple and highly personal style of reggae,
Alpha Blondy embodies West Africa's young urban generation, who
have never known colonisation. Fascinated by all things Western, they
rebel against their parents, refuse to submit to the rules of traditional
culture and aspire to the making of modern Africa. In New York, the
young Seydou Koné lived through ghettos, madness and suffering,
before becoming the gentle rasta singing of non-violence and anti-racism
("Apartheid is Nazism", 1985) under the name Alpha Blondy.
As a public figure, he tries to funnel the many demands made on him
into a mystic approach ("Come Back Jesus", 1985, "Jerusalem" 1986).
He holds great affection for Abidjan ("Cocody Rock",1984), and has
served his country's cause since his return ("Café Cacao", 1993).
Despite the fact that this compilation of 13 greats does not feature
his first hit "Brigadier Sabari", it traces ten years of increasingly
refined work to perfection.
